The most popular story is that Margaret Herrick, an Academy librarian and eventual executive director, remarked that the statuette resembled her Uncle Oscar, and the Academy staff began to refer to it by that name. Although the nickname was used with increasing frequency during the late 1930s, the Academy didn't officially use the name Oscar until 1939.كيف استلم اوسكار شهرة كنيتة ليست واضحة تماما.ان القصة الاكثر شعبية هي ان المدعوه مارغريت هيريك ، ومكتبة الاكاديميه و المدير التنفيذي لاحظت ان التمثال الصغير يشبه عمها أوسكار وبدأ موظفو المعهد الاشارة اليه بهذا الاسم. رغم ان الكنيـه اتستخدم بشكل متزايد في أواخر الثلاثينات ، الاكاديميه لم تستخدم رسميا اسم اوسكار حتى 1939.

Each Oscar checks in at a statuesque 13 1/2 inches, weighs 8 1/2 pounds, and is made of bronze that has been plated with 24-karat gold.Over the years, Oscar has received several "facelifts." Juvenile actors like Shirley Temple and Hayley Mills received mini replicas, and Walt Disney was honored with a full-sized statue and seven dwarf-sized ones. During WWII, the award was made of plaster. One biography of Bette Davis claims that she named the Oscar after her first husband, bandleader Harmon Oscar Nelson.[6] Another claimed origin is that of the Academy’s Executive Secretary, Margaret Herrick, who first saw the award in 1931 and made reference of the statuette reminding her of her Uncle Oscar (Levy 2003). Columnist Sidney Skolsky was present during Herrick’s naming and seized the name in his byline, "Employees have affectionately dubbed their famous statuette 'Oscar'" (Levy 2003).
However it came to be, both Oscar and Academy Award are registered trademarks of the Academy, and are fiercely protected by the Academy through litigation and threats thereof.
